Just read Eric Steven Raymonds paper How to become a Hacker
I got the link from Paul Graham. In his book Hackers And Painters he refers to the paper and describes how Eric recommends every (programmer) to learn Lisp, simply to be a better programmer. I will personally never become a real hacker, but I like a lot of the principals.
Something, which inspired me was
don't hide information
learn to be good at a lot of things
Personally, I want to learn about a lot of topics ranging from sociology to economics and linguistics.
And then I find it interesting that he recommends practicing writing in English. I believe Joel Spolsky also advocates for that.
