This post is the first in a series of four, where I reflect on how I have worked with my professional development during the last 16 years:
Define a vision
Can you plan for a career? Well, you cannot plan for the chances you get, but you can prepare yourself to be ready when they come, by thinking about what you want. Changing career path is not impossible, but it is not done overnight either.
But how do you define a vision? There are many methods, which can help you do that, just google for words like "vision, strategy, methods, model" and the like. I personally like to use phase 1+2 of the 4D model:
Phase 1: Discover. Think about situations, where you perform exceptionally good. Tasks, you like to do and are good at.
Phase 2: Dream. Without limitations, in a perfect dream world, what areas do you work with? How do you work?
Or write a list of your five heros (work related, not Marvel heroes). They could be former teachers, people you studied together with, people from your Linkedin network, people whos blogs your read, anywhere from your physical or virtual network. What is it that is awesome about these guys? Look at their linkedin profiles. Is there something there, which can inspire you?
Or put a piece of paper and a pen in your pocket and take a walk in the park. Let your mind free and don't think about anything in particular. If ideas pop up, write them down and move on.
The methods you use doesn't matter, it is the thought processes that does. When you have a vision (and before), write it down. Challenge it. Change it. When it feels right, stop. And move on to develop a strategy on how to get there.
